Life GroupsFAQ

So, you’re thinking about joining a Life Group?  Here are some of the most Frequently Asked Questions:

What exactly is a Life Group, anyway?
Life Groups come alongside you in your journey through life.  These groups are designed for you to “do life with” a few others, a tour guide who knows the path, and the ultimate road map – the Bible.  Groups meet regularly for Bible study, prayer, serving together and investing in each other’s lives.

Who else will be in my Life Group?
Life Groups come in many sizes and formats, and are typically from 3-15 people in a group.  Some Life Groups meet as a medium-size group (think of it as a really small church), and then break into smaller groups for discussion.

When and where would my Life Group meet?
Some meet at The Compass Church on campus, and others meet off-campus in coffee shops and individuals’ homes.  Oftentimes, the groups collectively choose what days and times work best for everybody’s schedules. Initially, though, we try to match you with others who live near you and have compatible schedules. Opportunities to join Life Groups are available year-round, although many of the groups slow down or break entirely in the summer.

What happens at a Life Group?
At the core of The Compass Church Life Groups is the study, discussion and application of the Bible. We strongly encourage groups to regularly pray for one another and develop friendships. Your group chooses when to meet, for how long, and which Bible studies you want to explore. Food is often part of the equation as well!

One individual in the Life Group serves as Coordinator (who communicates with an Adult Ministry Leader from The Compass Church), while Life Group members take turns as the “tour guide” (who facilitates the discussion) and Host (hosting the group meeting at their home).

Most Life Groups also get together socially. What you do is up to you! The point is to share your lives together – and that takes on a unique dynamic within each Life Group.

What will we study?
We encourage newly forming Life Groups to go through a Bible
study called Great Beginnings. After that, your group can choose
what you want to study next. The Compass Church has a great list of resources to help you them determine which materials are best suited for your particular group, and many are for sale in our Resource Center.

Do I have to be a Bible scholar to participate?
The key to growing spiritually is not just acquired knowledge, but application. Life Groups are designed for us to study God’s word together and apply God’s truths to everyday life.  Of course, Bible scholars are more than welcome, but if you’re investigating the claims of Christianity or are unfamiliar with God’s word, we welcome your questions!
